Develop a positive climate for freedom of association and collective bargaining

Although recognized in most major sportswear brand codes of conduct, the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining is continually threatened. Workers who organize unions face discrimination, dismissal, and even violence. Factories where workers have organized trade unions have been closed, and orders have been shifted to non-union factories. To uphold this internationally-recognized human right in their contract factories, sportswear companies need to counter this negative trend by taking steps to create a positive climate for freedom of association and collective bargaining.

Sportswear companies need to:

A1

Require suppliers to issue 'Right to Organize' guarantees to workers.

A4

Provide an accessible complaints process for workers.

A9

Require suppliers to sign union access agreements.
